Latest researches have shown that innovation is much more than just a vertical process, internal to an organization. Innovation is often created outside of the boundaries of a firm. Several new types of innovation emerge to consensus: Open Innovation (OI). Open Innovation focuses on profit-maximizing and suggests that organizations can be more succesful when commercializing innovations which originated outside of their boundaries. User Innovation (UI). User Innovation focuses on user benefit and suggests that the user has the motivation and knowledge to push improvements to the product they use, and even new product ideas. Cumulative Innovation (CI). Cumulative Innovation suggests innovation builds upon innovation, step by step, to improve the state-of-the-art. Cumulative innovation can also result from unmonetized knowledge transferred from an organization to another sometimes via explicit cooperation and sometimes through unwanted means. We at OWT are familiar with these concepts for years as we incorporated them in our day-to-day work. First, when we design a system, we don't reinvent the wheel, we take the best component out there and assemble it in our solution (OI). Then we work with a user-centric approach, capturing user ideas, experimenting with user panels and adjusting as needed (UI). Finally, our approach is incremental and adaptive, to always catch the state-of-the-art and avoid putting our efforts in the wrong direction (CI). How can those concepts be applied to your organization?
