On September 13, we co-hosted together with UBS WM our second Community of Practice for Augmented Reality (AR) at the Innovation Lab of UBS WM. 28 participants representing Startups, SMEs and corporations shared their vision and experience with Augmented Reality. Our keynote speakers from UBS, Swiss Post, SBB and OWT discussed inspiring AR projects and shared their insights.
Showcased Projects
- Immerse clients in their dream lifestyle.
With this new HoloLens solution, an investment advisor can project her client in a realistic scenario and have her visualize future investments. The solution improves the advisory process and fosters motivation to optimize plans based on the client's life objectives. The project was conducted by Abel Japon, Project Manager at the UBS WM Innovation Lab.
- Capture efficiency gains.
Although Swiss Post automatically dispatch most letters, some still need to be processed manually. And that manual process has just become more efficient thanks to a prototype HoloLens solution presented by Simon Marville, Head of CIO Office at Swiss Post. It demonstrated how AR innovations can be leveraged to capture efficiency gains and lead to new business opportunities.
- Provide expert coaching anywhere.
Maintenance workers operating in the Gotthard Basis Tunnel now benefit from increased versatility and direct access to expert knowledge with this proof-of-concept presented by Tom Gut, Head of Life Cycle Management Gotthard Line of SBB.
The idea for the solution originates from the first Community of Practice get together in March 2017. The proof-of-concept was created in partnership with Open Web Technology within just 2 months.
Key Insights
The panel discussion moderated by Jan Lässig, Innovation Manager at UBS, highlighted optimistic views on the future of Augmented Reality:
- We're just scratching the surface in terms of potential.
AR is still at the beginning. The participants expect significant boosts in B2B as soon as the limiting factors such as the cost and reliability of lenses are lifted.
- Employee adoption is key.
Coaching and support through AR empower employees with new responsibilities, provide improved experience, and create great opportunities for job enrichment. However as with any disruptive technologies, legitimate employee fears need to be carefully addressed to ensure employee adoption.
- The right time is now.
All participants agree. While the technology still needs to mature, now is the time to start experimenting, to build competencies, and position your organization to capture the gains of the up-coming boom in Augmented Reality.
